Foil vs Épée: Which Should Your Child Start With?

Choosing a first weapon is one of the first questions every fencing parent asks, and at Blade Fencing KL we keep it simple: almost every young fencer starts the same way.

Our Little Fencers and Beginner Foil groups all begin with foil, building the coordination, balance, and basic footwork every fencer needs, regardless of what weapon they eventually choose. These fundamentals carry over well into épée too.

Around age 11 or older, our coaches assess which weapon suits each fencer best, drawing on time spent watching how they move, react, and compete. For fencers joining us a little later, we usually recommend starting straight in épée instead of foil. Foil at that stage tends to already be competitive, making it a tough entry point for newcomers, while épée's lack of right-of-way rules gives older beginners a gentler, more tactical way in.

Personality matters too. Foil suits fencers who are quick, decisive, and enjoy structure, since touches only count on the torso and right-of-way decides who scores. Épée suits those who are patient and strategic, since the whole body is a target and reading your opponent matters more than speed alone.

Starting later doesn't mean missing out, either. Singapore's Lim Wei Wen, a former coach at Blade Singapore, started fencing at 19 and went on to win bronze in men's individual épée at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.
